Building the Future: How nbm is Supporting Tomorrow’s Quantity Surveyors

Our role on Wheatley Group’s consultants framework drives our dedication to community benefits, a core requirement of our contracts. These benefits allow us to make a positive impact by offering training and opportunities like work experience placements for aspiring Quantity Surveyors in Glasgow and Scotland. A recent example is Abbie, who joined us for a two-day work experience placement to explore a career in Quantity Surveying, made possible through our Wheatley Group projects.

Under the guidance of our Project Quantity Surveyor, Adam Wright, Abbie gained practical insights into nbm’s Professional Quantity Surveying expertise. Over the two days, she:

  • Met our team and learned about daily office operations.
  • Explored Cost Plans and Bills of Quantities, understanding their preparation processes, that define our Construction Cost Management services.
  • Trained on our electronic measurement software, measuring external works as a hands-on exercise.
  • Learned about Applications for Payment and the documentation required for the payment process, a key aspect of Cost Management Services.
  • Connected with one of our trainee Quantity Surveyors, who shared insights into studying at GCU, including showing Abbie a likely timetable and subjects to be studied together with examples of coursework required as part of the university curriculum .

This placement underscores our commitment to nurturing talent and contributing to the community, in line with the Wheatley Group’s vision for local impact.

A Programme Designed for Industry Success

At nbm, we’re committed to creating opportunities that transform lives and strengthen the communities we serve. Through our partnership with the Wheatley Group and our place on their consultants framework, we deliver community benefits that provide jobs, training, and hands-on experiences for local people. As a key supporter of the Graduate Apprenticeship in BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), we combine these efforts with a four-year programme that blends academic education with practical experience, preparing apprentices for a rewarding career in the built environment.

The Graduate Apprenticeship is tailored to meet the construction industry’s evolving needs, equipping apprentices with skills to address sector demands through our Construction Cost Management expertise. Apprentices spend one day per week at GCU during term time, studying modules aligned with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) standards, including construction technology, commercial management, law, and construction economics. The remaining four days are spent with us at nbm, applying theoretical knowledge to live projects. This work-study model ensures our apprentices develop the technical and professional expertise required to excel as Quantity Surveyors and support our Quantity Surveyor Services.

Entry to the course is typically made through employer sponsorship, such as nbm's own apprenticeship programme.
